About the lodge
Travellers Rest is in the town of Kisoro, in the far south-west of Uganda, with the Virunga volcanoes standing over it. The hotel has been here a long time and is closely associated with Dian Fossey, who used it as a base during her years working with the mountain gorillas.
It is a comfortable, old-fashioned place: gardens, a fireplace, and rooms that have been looked after rather than rebuilt. The atmosphere is the point.
From here you can reach Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the southern sector of Bwindi, and the Rwandan border is close enough that the hotel also works as a base for treks in Volcanoes National Park across the line.
